Presbyterian Sandwiches
Why it's on our list
This old timey recipe goes by many names but in the Ashley family we call them Presbyterian Sandwiches aka Presby Sammies because Momma Ashley got the recipe from her dear friend Barbara from PHPC (Preston Hollow Presby Church).
We've made these for all sorts of occasions - baby showers, game day parties, Summer BBQs, brunches. The list goes on and so do the compliments because they are just cheesy, bready bites of goodness.
Ingredients
1/2 lb. butter melted
3 Tbsp. mustard
1 small onion grated
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 lb. shaved ham
3/4 lb. swiss cheese
Hawaiian rolls
1 1/2 Tbsp. poppy seeds (Whitney never uses these but to each her own sammie)
Directions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Mix first 5 ingredients
Take rolls out of package but keep them intact. With a bread knife, slice in half keeping the top layer connected together as well as the bottom layer.
In a 9x13 pan (use disposable for easier clean up) place the bottom layer of the buns. put two to three slices of ham on each roll followed by a slice of cheese. This can really be a BYOSS (build your own sammie sitch) and you can fill them with as much or as little ham and cheese as you want. Put top layer of buns on top.
Pour sauce over rolls and marinate overnight. Bake 325* for 30 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes.
*Get creative! You can mix any combo of meat and cheese or even make it veggie with some slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini.
